
The mayor of Istanbul’s Greater Municipality, Ekrem Imamoglu, announced the completion of the restoration work of the basilica cistern or the sunken palace “Yerebatan sarnıcı”, which is located in the Sultanahmet district.
He also explained that it will be opened to visitors this weekend, after restoration work that lasted for about 5 years.
The Basilica Cistern is an underground water tank, which took 38 years to build and consists of 336 columns. It provided water for the palaces and buildings of Constantinople, and is one of the most visited tourist places in the city.
