The Italian magazine “Focus” said that if you care about your health, the most appropriate distance between work and home, estimated by specialists, is less than 3 kilometers.
A Swedish study showed that stress, weight gain and insomnia are symptoms resulting from the lifestyle of those who travel long distances daily between work and housing, and that mental and physical health also depends on the length of that trip.
The Swedish study looked at the relationship between the distance between home and office and lifestyle, as it was found that the greater the distance it takes to go to work, the greater the risk of weight gain, exposure to stress and poor sleep, as the research investigated the effects of mobility on health with the help of data collected between 2012 and 2018.
Researchers examined the responses of nearly 13,000 men and women between the ages of 16 and 64 on a range of topics, including lifestyle, whether they exercise, drink or smoke, the type of work and whether it is stressful, and whether they suffer from chronic diseases. It is stress and depression.
The study revealed that when the distance between the office and home exceeded three kilometers, workers had problems with excess weight, were more stressed and suffered from lack of sleep.
It is noteworthy that the category most at risk are those who worked more than 40 hours and traveled more than five hours per week than those who worked from one to five hours per week.
On the other hand, workers who traveled less than three kilometers were more physically active, perhaps because the short distance they traveled made it easier to walk or bike to work, or because the short commute gave them more free time to exercise.
